German Writer Wins Nobel Prize...

OK: she's Rumanian-born, but Herta Müller grew up in a German-speaking village on the old East German frontier. Now resident in Berlin, she is famous for her tales of the Ceauşescu-era Communist East... Although translated into 20 languages, her books have never been especially popular in Germany. A situation that will surely change with the glare of attention a Nobel laureateship inevitably brings ...

... and as for Barrack Obama winning the Nobel Prize for Peace... have the judges gone off their heads?!?

  1. Those people that get prizes year after year in biology, chemistry, medicine haven't still found the cure to cancer, autoimmune diseases, influenza, drug addiction, etc.. and that's quite frustrating.

  2. Indeed.
And the "Peace" prize seems more about politics than peace to me!

  3. Look I have no issue with Obama, in fact I think he's the great black hope but he hasn't actually done anything yet!

  4. They have gone mad. I love this article by the Wall Street Journal... and the title is brilliant:

  6. BAINO: ~~ I know. I thought the Nobel Prize was meant to be a "lifetime achievement" type award. Not something you give to someone newly elected to add kudos to a fledgling presidency ..(!)

    JENNY: here here!

BIMBIMBIE: I don't blame him. In fact if it had been me, I'd have been tempted to turn them down ..!

  9. I think that President Obama is a great choice. I think that he has helped bring a new face to the US internationally. And it's a much better outlook than in previous years.

  10. SB: but don't you think he won it a bit soon... he's only been in office a few months!

Syd: I agree it could well be a great choice... time will tell. It just seems to me nakedly politically motivated giving him the prize... which I somehow had assumed the Nobel Judging Committee should somehow be above ...

    (how naive was I!!?!)
