I WAS ON THE BUS THIS MORNING minding my own business when a toddler ~ whose mother had the strongest cockney tones I've heard in a long while ~ totally distracted me with his entertaining exclamations.This baby boy was at that certain toddling age when children's voices, in transition from babyhood, take on a hilariously loud cartoon timbre. This little boy had it full on, plus a cockney accent even stronger ~ as if that were possible ~ than his mother's.
I turned round and he was sitting there like a miniature old man, full of unspoken gesture and a certain stylishness. And I wished I was a talent scout and could have filmed him... and then it was my stop.
Children can be soooo funny. My grandchildren have me in stitches most of the time. :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing how quickly children pick up the language and accent of their surroundings so quickly, which is why it is obviously great and easy to learn so many languages at this critical/crucial time.
ReplyDeleteKids are hilarious, aren't they? One of my favourite pastimes when I'm standing in the queue for the checkout at the supermarket is finding the nearest little kid and trying to make them laugh. I get peculiar looks...from the kids...and the adults think it's as funny as hell.

ReplyDeleteBeing a mainly white population out here, it surprised me years ago when on a school bus trip with my aunt (a teacher, we were hitching a ride on the excursion bus to London) and a little black girl with more bobbles in her hair than I could count spoke in a strong cockney accent . ."Do you want a swee'ee miss?" I expected a West Indian accent for some reason . .she was probably 5th generation Brit!

HIT 40: he was a bit older than the one shown, a right little toddler. I can't remember whether he was wearing a flat cap, but should have been.
ReplyDeleteBTW I saw something about babies and language on TV. It was hilarious. In the first few months of their lives, babies everywhere cooed in the same accent. A year later the French one was going ho-he-ho-he-hoa while the Londoner was whining away aww rwaaaaaay yeaaah!
