I used to have a winter white Siberian hamster... only mine went grey in November, not white!
Stoats go white in winter; the white coat is usually known as ermine...

ReplyDeleteDo you know why ermine was so valuable as a fur? In the cold, it does not "ice up" from a person's breath. You may not have cold severe enough there to appreciate this - but here - esp as a kid, our scarves would get first wet then frozen from our breathing through it - causing chapped lips and various other discomforts. Generally, ermine is beyond anybody's budget.

ReplyDeleteJeannie: no we barely ever get lower than -5C and that would be very rare for London. Maybe Scotland goes down to -10C or lower but again rarely. 40 below is North American or Russian weather!

I can't imagine killing these little furry critters for their coat. How sad is that.
