MIDWINTER...
I used to have a winter white Siberian hamster... only mine went grey in November, not white!

Stoats go white in winter; the white coat is usually known as ermine...
Isn't this a cute picture:

It was very interesting for me to read the article. Thanks for it. I like such topics and everything that is connected to them. I definitely want to read more on that blog soon.
Do you know why ermine was so valuable as a fur? In the cold, it does not "ice up" from a person's breath. You may not have cold severe enough there to appreciate this - but here - esp as a kid, our scarves would get first wet then frozen from our breathing through it - causing chapped lips and various other discomforts. Generally, ermine is beyond anybody's budget.
Hi, Gleds and Happy New Year. I never knew what a stoat looked like before!
Anon: why thank you!
Jeannie: no we barely ever get lower than -5C and that would be very rare for London. Maybe Scotland goes down to -10C or lower but again rarely. 40 below is North American or Russian weather!
Welshcakes: nor did I till Saturday... and aren't they cute!
I can't imagine killing these little furry critters for their coat. How sad is that.
